![]() Rather, both excessive freedom and excessive constraint are costly to societal well-being. We argue that neither position is correct. The age-old question remains: Does evidence favor freedom over constraint for societal well-being, or vice versa? However, despite much philosophizing, there has been surprisingly little empirical data brought to bear on this question. In the United States today, modern examples of this age-old tension include the controversy surrounding the Patriot Act in the years following 9/11 and the recent debates concerning the legitimacy of the National Security Agency’s mass surveillance techniques. They were found in Plato’s Republic, continued among Chinese and European philosophers, and extend into the modern era (see also ). Proponents of constraint insist that rules and regulations are critical for creating a secure and stable society that enables happiness and progress. Advocates of the importance of freedom claim that autonomy allows individuals to self-actualize and maximizes societal happiness and economic progress. In fields as diverse as psychology, sociology, and political and economic philosophy, there is a long-standing debate concerning the best way to organize societies. PLoS ONE 10(6):Īcademic Editor: Martin Voracek, University of Vienna, AUSTRIA This supports the notion that a balance between freedom and constraint results in the best national outcomes. Relative to moderate nations, very permissive and very constrained nations exhibit worse psychosocial outcomes (lower happiness, greater dysthymia, higher suicide rates), worse health outcomes (lower life expectancy, greater mortality rates from cardiovascular disease and diabetes) and poorer economic and political outcomes (lower gross domestic product per capita, greater risk for political instability). Should they emphasize individual freedom and autonomy or security and constraint? Contrary to proponents who tout the benefits of one over the other, we demonstrate across 32 nations that both freedom and constraint exhibit a curvilinear relationship with many indicators of societal well-being. Throughout history and within numerous disciplines, there exists a perennial debate about how societies should best be organized. ![]()

![]() ![]() When the Queen angrily asks for the girl's name the spirit describes her, making it obvious to the Queen that Snow White is the one being referred to. When asked who the fairest of all is, for the first time the spirit replies that, while the Queen is beautiful, a fairer being exists. The first scene of the film releals that the Mirror hangs in the Queen's private chamber she walks to the mirror and summons the slave within, who appears amid smoke and fire. However, fearing that her stepdaughter, Snow White, may one day become more beautiful than she, the Queen dresses the girl in rags and forces her to work as a scullery maid in the Queen's Castle. The film's introduction (told in the form of a book) informs the audience that the Queen consults the Magic Mirror every morning, demanding to know who is fairest of all as long as the Slave in the Mirror answers that the Queen is the fairest, she is content, knowing that the Mirror never lies. Faithful to his first appearance, the spirit is most frequently depicted as a slave, though owners have varied, ranging from the Queen to Walt Disney himself. In such appearances, the Slave in the Magic Mirror is referred to as the premier expert on the Disney Villains, and, while sometimes depicted as sympathizing with them (as in the Cinderella Castle Mystery Tour at Tokyo Disneyland ), is sometimes shown to dislike them (as in his role as host of the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs DVD). The Magic Mirror has appeared many times since its debut in 1937, in television specials such as the annual Halloween Treat to Disneyland attractions such as the show Fantasmic!. The general format for the solar metadata was as follows: ( ap = Mojave’s Dynamic Desktop FormatĪs it turns out though Mattt at NSHipster had done some digging around into the format for Mojave and that proved to be a good starting place.Įncoded within the heic file for the default dynamic wallpaper for Mojave was a metadata item named “solar”, which detailed the position of the sun in the sky in terms of its altitude and azimuth, for each of the images. So naturally I was excited to create my own dynamic desktops with this new style, but like with the previous ones, Apple hasn’t said anything about how one would go about doing that. I don’t use dark mode only at night 2, and so I’d often be left with a dark UI and a searing bright wallpaper. While I was enamoured with Mojave’s dynamic desktops at first, I ended up switching to a regular wallpaper after some time. This style is even acknowledged separately in System Preferences as “Automatic” rather than “Dynamic”. Keeping with tradition macOS Catalina includes a new default wallpaper, and while it is a dynamic desktop, it works a bit differently: It only has two images rather than sixteen, and rather than switching between them based on time, the wallpaper is set based on whether your appearance preference is set to light or dark mode. Once enabled, a dynamic wallpaper would cycle between a number of related images 1, showing one that was appropriate for the time of day. With macOS Monterey beta 9, Apple has added more variations of the default wallpaper. To go with dark mode, macOS Mojave introduced a feature called “dynamic wallpapers”. Check out our best gaming headset guide to find out. But any tinkering in the backend has been a light touch with the Pro X and that's left the audio relatively balanced on the surface, if a little flat and lacking impact. That's not a complete put-down: the bass could be far more overpowering for a gaming device. They are some ways short of remarkable, however. You'll have no trouble with tracking audio in-game either, and there's enough definition through the 50mm drivers to place a footstep here or a bullet whizzing by there. ![]() It is, at least, very clear in-game-the piercing profile cuts right through the roar of gunfire and fighter jet flying overhead in a game of Call of Duty: Warzone. It's a very sharp profile, and I'm told it's not entirely pleasant to be on the receiving end of during an early morning meeting. The microphone offers a lot of clarity, and I mean a lot. Mic audio is far cleaner with only the default EQ in place. The provided EQs, some of which are truly just for the laughs, do more to obscure my voice than make it much clearer. I'm a fan of Blue's lineup-I've been more than happy to recommend the Snowball and Yeti in the past-but the Blue Vo!ce functionality feels a little gimmicky, as does the name. But needs must.Īs for the microphone, I wasn't quite as blown away by it as I was hoping to be. A Blue microphone takes centre stage with the Pro X, so it seems a little backwards to limit that functionality. It does mean you won't be able to hardware mute the detachable boom mic, however. The spare cable is far quieter than the intended PC cable, and if you've dedicated media keys on your keyboard you'll likely be reaching for those before your headset's inline controls anyways. It's still a worthwhile swap in my opinion. The other cable included in the box isn't braided, but only offers a single button on its inline controls for mobiles, which is totally useless on PC. If that's not bad enough for a headset, due to the stiffness of the braided outer fabric, the cable also has a tendency to get tangled up in itself-you'll often have to unplug it and (gently) straighten it back out again to restore the full length. Even the slightest bit of head movement will have the cable and inline controls scratching your clothes, the sound of which travels all the way up the cable and right into your eardrum. I prefer the leatherette option myself, as they make for somewhat greater sound isolation (although still far from the best), but they will likely be warmer over long periods than the breathable fabric on additional set.įor one, braided cables are much louder than non-braided cables. They're a little fiddly to switch out-the process involves carefully slotting an elastic fabric into the plastic surrounding each ear cup-so you'll likely have to settle for one set and leave the others in the box. All of which is up to the standard we've come to expect from the company.īetween the two sets of ear pads you have a choice of leatherette or cloth, both filled with memory foam to keep the headset cosy around the ears.
